In the conclusion of The Great Gatsby and Jake, reinvented, the authors seem to be drawing an analogy between Gatsby/Jake’s dream of Daisy/Didi and the American dream. One point is that both Gatsby/Jake’s dream and the American dream are unachieved. Write an essay explaining the connection between Jake’s quest and the American dream. You must also explain why the author chose to end the novel with failure.

1. Why doesn’t anyone support Jake in court? What does this relate to in The Great Gatsby?
2. Explain the following: “He was unmade, not by fire, but by cold, smooth indifference.” How does this relate to The Great Gatsby?
3. Explain Dipsy’s metaphor about the remora.
4. Write a commentary on Rick’s statements about what high school students have to “endure” to make it through this “four-year ordeal.” Is this an accurate depiction of high school life? Why?
5. Explain why Rick feels “helpless.” What is the significance of the wedding party?
6. Rick-“They’re crappy people. You’re worth more than the lot of them put together.”
Nick-“They’re a rotten crowd. You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together.”

Jake, Essay
We are currently working on an essay for Jake, Reinvented. We will do the majority of the writing in class but the students should have the essay completed by Friday. The students are also to read through chapter 13 of Jake, Reinvented by Friday as well.
